Appliances

  • look for a logo. When buying new appliances look for the energy efficiency logo.
  • turn stuff off. Cut down on wasted energy by not leaving appliances like your TV or Hi-Fi on standby.
  • charge things less. Don't leave gadgets filling up with juice when they're already full. When your phones' fully charged, it's fully charged. Turn the power off.
  • fridges. Don't leave your fridge door hanging open 'cos cold air will escape. Avoid putting hot or warm food straight into the fridge; allow it to cool down first. Defrost your fridge regularly to keep it running efficiently and cheaply. If it tends to frost up quickly, check the door seal. And if you absolutely have to site your fridge next to a cooker or boiler, leave a good gap between them.
  • washers. When doing your washing always use a full load and if you can't, bung in half. Or stick your washer on economy. Also, you won't be losing out if you wash at low temperatures- modern washing powders will cope no problem at all. If you've got a dishwasher and you have to use it, stick to the lowest temperature programme and fill it right up.
  • dryers. Hang clothes out to dry instead of using the tumble dryer. If you do use the dryer don't load it up with really wet clothes. Wring them out or spin-dry them first. It's much faster and it'll save you cash.
  • cookers. When cooking choose the right size pan for the food and cooker (the base should just cover the cooking ring). Keep lids battened down when cooking. If you're using gas, the flames only need to heat the bottom of the pan. If they lick up the side then you're wasting heat. And don't use more water than you need because it doesn't just waste energy, it spoils food.
